Cams Hill School is a caring, supportive, and friendly school community with a strong commitment to collaborative working to achieve the very best for our pupils.  We are seeking to recruit a Communication Support Worker to support deaf and hearing-impaired pupils in accessing the curriculum across all subjects initially with pupils in Year 7.

Applicants should be good communicators, empathetic, creative, and passionate about education and maximizing potential. Applicants must be highly motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.

The CSW is expected to be part of our Learning Coach team working with individuals/small groups of pupils within mainstream lessons. Although primary responsibilities of CSW relate to interpreting, you may also be required to offer other forms of communication support, e.g. note taking, lip speaking and in addition basic hearing equipment checks.  The CSW is not the sole person responsible for the support of deaf pupils and will work with the classroom teacher and as part of the Learning Coach team.

Although most teaching involves interpreting, information must be presented in a form accessible to the pupils.  In general, for a CSW to be most effective, adaption and modification of contents, structure and language during the lesson may be required according to the needs of the pupil in terms of-

•        Sign language skills

•        Ability to take in new information

•        Level of language

Subject specific vocabulary (pre learning and overlearning)

Small group interventions

The CSW should pass on the information provided by the teacher.  The CSW is not responsible for altering the content without their agreement.  However, the CSW may decide to drop extraneous information where they judge that the pupil cannot take on any new information.  Technical vocabulary and relevant subject information should not be omitted.

For further information, please email vacancies@camshill.com in the first instance.

Key requirements include:

·         Commitment to working to a high standard to support educational excellence for pupils

·         Excellent organising, planning and prioritising skills

·         Patience and assertiveness.

·         Ability to work at a fast pace and meet tight deadlines

·         Ability to relate well to pupils, parents/carers, staff and other professionals.

·         Good standard of literacy.

·         A “can do” attitude”

·         Ability to work constructively as part of a team.
