About this Role

The St Marylebone CE School is a brilliant place to work and learn. In the words of our staff: “We thrive as teachers here because we are trusted and collaboration is so valued.”   The School welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds, races, cultures, faiths and genders.   The School actively promotes diversity and inclusion across its community and our students come from a wide range of backgrounds: 40% of our students speak English as an additional language; 59% of our students come from backgrounds other than white British.

We would like to recruit a Teacher of English to join our successful and well-established department in September or October 2026, as a maternity cover. This is a fixed term post. The ability to offer a second subject, such as Classics, would be welcome though not necessary.

While our ideal requirement is for three days a week, we value talent, teamwork and flexibility. Applications are welcome from experienced teachers and strong ECTs. We offer an excellent ECT induction programme and invest energetically in the growth of all our staff.

The English department has a record of excellent results at GCSE and A-Level and a commitment to outstanding teaching and learning. The department balances collaboration with creativity: within our well-designed schemes of work there is plenty of scope for each teacher to explore their individual strengths, areas of expertise and teaching styles.  We have a strong focus on developing literacy and a love of reading, and work closely with the school library to ensure all students become habitual readers. We run an annual whole-school Reading Week, a Year 7 Poetry Day, events for World Poetry Day and World Book Day, book clubs, poetry clubs and author talks. Teachers frequently organise trips for their own classes to see productions of texts being studied.  We also run a weekly A-Level Enrichment Club.

About the School

Founded in 1791, The St Marylebone CE School is an outstanding comprehensive school for girls with a mixed sixth form, serving students of all faiths or no faith. St Marylebone takes pride in being a brilliant place to work and learn: rated consistently ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and SIAMS, the School is one of the best-performing state schools nationally.  We value highly the role of the arts and creativity in education, across the curriculum.  We lead the regional Maths Hub, the Arts in Education Leadership course and St Marylebone Outreach, through which we collaborate with other schools to develop the best in teaching and learning.
