Science at Chiltern Hills Academy is located within dedicated labs and a large prep room. Two Science Technicians are in post to support the department in a range of activities that help bring the science curriculum to life. Students follow a 2-year Key Stage 3 and study Science 7 hours per fortnight. As students move into Key Stage 4, they follow the Combined Science pathway on 9 hours per fortnight over 2 years. We also offer Triple Science alongside the Combined Science pathway. Outside of the classroom we have developed a range of STEM activities including Interact Club.   

The Role:
Chiltern Hills Academy is seeking to appoint an inspirational, highly effective, and committed Lead Practitioner of Science to join our forward‑thinking and ambitious team. This is a key strategic role within the academy, offering an exciting opportunity for an exceptional practitioner to drive improvement within the Science Department while contributing to whole‑school priorities around the Quality of Education.

The role will be working closely with the Science Curriculum Lead, the successful candidate will play a central role in developing and sustaining high standards of teaching, learning, and student achievement across all key stages. You will be an outstanding classroom practitioner, passionate about Science education, with the credibility and expertise to support, mentor, and inspire colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • ·         Support the Science Curriculum Lead in the strategic development of the Science Department, ensuring consistently high standards of teaching, learning, and outcomes.
  • ·         Model outstanding classroom practice in Science, including high‑quality practical work, effective assessment, and evidence‑informed pedagogy.
  • ·         Mentor, coach, and support Science teachers to enhance teaching and learning, providing professional challenge where appropriate.
  • ·         Contribute to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a broad, ambitious, and inclusive Science curriculum aligned with current national requirements.
  • ·         Support the analysis of assessment and progress data to identify trends, inform intervention, and improve student outcomes, including examination performance.
  • ·         Play a leading role in the design, delivery, and quality assurance of subject‑specific and whole‑school CPD, working collaboratively with senior leaders and other Lead Practitioners.
  • ·         Contribute to whole‑school self‑evaluation and improvement planning, particularly in relation to curriculum intent, implementation, and impact.
  • ·         Promote a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and scientific enquiry across the school, supporting enrichment and wider engagement with Science.
  • ·         Keep up to date with national developments in Science education, curriculum reform, and assessment to ensure best practice.
  • ·         Work effectively with colleagues and leaders to ensure consistency of approach, strong communication, and sustained improvement.
  • ·         Lead and oversee the school’s sustainability agenda and Eco‑Committee.

Potential applicants should have: 

  • ·         Qualified Teacher Status
  • ·         Successful record of teaching science including excellent examination results
  • ·         Is an outstanding Science teacher with a proven track record of impact in the classroom.
  • ·         Has experience of coaching, mentoring, or supporting colleagues to improve practice (or a strong desire to develop this).
  • ·         Demonstrates strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for curriculum innovation.
  • ·         Is committed to professional learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • ·         Shares our commitment to inclusion, sustainability, and high expectations for all students.
