About this Role

We are excited to be advertising for a Head of Science who must be a Physics specialist, including the ability to teach A Level Physics.  This is an exciting new role which has been created to support the further development of our successful science department.

The science department at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School consists of eleven specialist Science Teachers who are passionate about their subject.  The team is supported by three Technicians, who play a key role in a department which places a strong emphasis on the practical aspect of their subject.  Each subject is led by Head of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with the overall oversight of the department being led by the successful candidate of this newly created role.

Our KS3 Curriculum is designed to develop inquisitive scientists.  Our curriculum, practicals and extra-curricular activities all aim to inspire curiosity within our students about the world of science. Students in Year 7 and Year 8 are taught in their form classes and have six hours of science per fortnight.  In Year 9, students are taught in two bands by Biology, Chemistry and Physics specialists.  They have two hours per subject per fortnight.

At KS4, students study Combined Science or can opt to study Triple Science.  There is a high uptake of students who choose Triple Science.  Combined Scientists have three hours per fortnight per subject, taught by specialist teachers; and Triple Scientists are taught fourteen hours per fortnight, also taught by specialist teachers.

Students who choose to study A Level science are taught ten hours per fortnight in Year 12, and nine hours per fortnight in Year 13, with independent work set for a tenth lesson.

Everyone within the science department works collaboratively to ensure a safe and efficient learning environment for all students.  In addition, everyone contributes to wider opportunities such as extra-curricular activities including Science Week.  You will also find the whole science team having cake at regular break times to test out baking skills across the department!

If you would like to arrange a school visit, please contact Sarah Forster, Headteacher, via Louise Rumbelow, Headteacher's PA (lrumbelow@tggsacademy.org) or if you have any questions in relation to the role or the recruitment process, please contact Abigail Henwood, HR Manager (personnel@tggsacademy.org).

Thank you for your interest in this role and our school. We look forward to hearing from you!

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All roles within our school are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and it is an offence to apply to this role is you are barred from engaging in regulated activity with children.

As part of our safer recruitment procedures, references will be taken up for all shortlisted applicants, and online searches will be completed. The successful candidate will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check, including a Child Barred List check, and other relevant employment checks.
