About this Role

The School

Kingsmead is a large, oversubscribed school that, despite serving a postcode in the top 20% most deprived parts of England:

    • Has an ambitious curriculum, with almost an almost exclusively GCSE KS4 and A Level KS5, aiming for a high number of EBacc entries while also having a performing and visual arts specialism.
    • A track record of above average progress scores in spite of the challenge posed by such an ambitious curriculum.
    • Exceptional behaviour, with a consistent approach that combines explicit boundaries with the space to build relationships and support those children who need it.
    • A thoughtfully constructed wider school experience for the children, with an ambitious combination of clubs, trips, careers guidance and wider enrichment.

The Department

The Maths Department at Kingsmead is bound by the principle that all students can be successful at Maths. Teachers in our department continually develop their specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, working collaboratively to refine and improve their practice. This takes place during time that is specially allocated for professional development on a weekly basis.

At Key Stage 3, we work closely with the Maths Hub to implement a Mastery Curriculum from year 7. We believe that everyone can learn and enjoy mathematics and we provide strong foundations that will allow students to progress confidently to KS4 and beyond. The Maths Curriculum ensures a coherent and detailed sequence of essential content to support sustained progression over time, and it is regularly reviewed and refined to suit the needs of our students. Outcomes for KS4 for Maths at Kingsmead are very positive, leading many students to study the subject at A-Level, and making it an extremely popular course, with around 60 A-level students in each year group. We also offer Further Maths with most students accepting Maths-related university courses

Learners in our department develop conceptual understanding and ability to use the language, symbols and notation of mathematics. We instil a love for the subject by teaching students to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, discovering relationships and making logical arguments and justifications.

The Role

As Deputy Head of Department, you will work closely with the Head of Maths to:

    • Support the strategic leadership and day-to-day running of the Maths departmentalways promoting and implementing school policies
    • Drive improvements in teaching and learning, with a sharp focus on the experience of disadvantaged pupils.
    • Lead on specific areas such as curriculum development, assessment, KS4/KS5, or development of teaching and learning (allocated based on strengths).
    • Work collaboratively with all stakeholders, with a focus on coaching and supporting colleagues, including early career teachers.
    • Model a culture of high expectations for all and consistent effective classroom practice.
    • Contribute to wholeschool priorities and improvement planning.
    • Engage feedback with open-mindedness and a growth mindset approach.

This role is ideally suited to an experienced teacher who is ready to step into middle leadership or an existing postholder seeking a new challenge in a supportive, forward-thinking school.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

    • Is an excellent teacher of Maths with strong subject knowledge. The ability to teach A-Level and A-Level Further Maths is strongly desirable.

    • Is committed to equity, inclusion and improving outcomes for disadvantaged learners
    • Has strong interpersonal skills and enjoys working collaboratively
    • Is willing to contribute by leading on parts of the department’s enrichment and outreach programmes
    • Is an effective and committed form tutor who understands the importance of strong pastoral relationships in supporting students’ academic success and wellbeing
    • Is reflective, organised and resilient
    • Shares our belief that all students can succeed with the right support and through high quality teaching
