A Learning Mentor plays a key role in supporting students to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential. The role involves working closely with individuals and small groups—particularly those who are underperforming or have Special Educational Needs (SEN)—to provide targeted academic, emotional, and behavioural support.
Learning Mentors act as listeners, guides, and encouragers, helping students build confidence, improve self-esteem, and develop the skills needed to succeed both in and out of the classroom. They deliver tailored literacy and numeracy interventions, create action plans, monitor progress, and maintain clear communication with teachers, parents, and external agencies.
The role also includes supporting the wider school community by promoting inclusive teaching practices, assisting the SENCo, and contributing to safeguarding and student wellbeing. Overall, a Learning Mentor is essential in fostering a positive learning environment, ensuring all students are supported to engage, progress, and thrive.
