About this Role

Are you looking for a career in a thriving, friendly and supportive environment where staff welfare is a priority?  Are you passionate about making a difference to the lives of young people in a role that really matters?  If so, The Bishop of Winchester Academy wants you!

Due to the current placeholder taking on another role within the Academy, we are seeking a talented, inspirational and experienced Head of English to lead the English Department, who is dedicated to mentoring our enthusiastic and high performing team.  You will play a significant role in shaping the department to ensure literature and language flourish at every stage of our students lives.

We can offer you the opportunity to deliver an ambitious curriculum where we “prioritise literacy” (Ofsted report 2023) and where our dedicated English department achieves exceptional outcomes from all year groups. We have developed a strong culture of collaboration and a vision of excellence, so that our students are able to excel as both writers and linguists.

We would be delighted to take you on a tour of the school and give you the opportunity to meet the department and answer any questions you may have.

As Head of English, you will be welcomed into an experienced team of creative professionals to:

  • Progress the English department to even greater success
  • Oversee and shape the English curriculum’s delivery
  • Lead and mentor your team, enhancing their teaching practice with innovative methods and ensuring they have a clear vision
  • Manage the allocation of resources and budgets
  • Collaborate with other heads of departments over learning to achieve a consistent and integrated methodology
  • Be committed to the wider school community and development of students
  • Promote the understanding and belief that every student can be successful

The Bishop of Winchester Academy is a thriving Church of England school, recently recognised by Ofsted as prioritising ‘wider opportunities alongside achievement so that pupils “live life to the full.”’ (Ofsted 2023).  Operating from recently refurbished facilities, our shared mission to improve the life chances of all of our students is at the very centre of our work.

We put the welfare of our staff at the heart of everything we do and can offer you:

  • Generous employer pension contribution at 28.6% basic salary from April 2024
  • Early Friday finish at 1:00pm
  • Career development with a bespoke CPD programme
  • Excellent newly refurbished teaching facilities with free onsite parking and good local public transport links
  • Employee Assistance Programme and Cycle to Work scheme
  • Close proximity to beaches and the Jurassic Coast to assist your work life balance
