Main Purpose of the Role
The Playworker will help provide a safe, welcoming, fun and inclusive after school club where children can relax, play, make friends and enjoy their time after the school day. The role involves supporting children’s play, supervising activities, ensuring children’s safety and wellbeing, and helping to create a positive club environment.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Children
- Welcome children into the club and help them feel safe, happy and included.
- Build positive relationships with children, families and colleagues.
- Encourage children to take part in a range of play opportunities and activities.
- Support children to develop confidence, independence, social skills and friendships.
- Help ensure all children are treated fairly and their individual needs are respected.
Activities and Play
- Assist with planning and delivering fun, creative and age-appropriate activities.
- Encourage child-led play and allow children to make choices about how they spend their time.
- Support indoor and outdoor play, games, crafts, role play, construction, sports and quiet activities.
- Help set up and tidy away resources and play areas.
Safeguarding and Welfare
- Ensure children are supervised at all times and kept safe.
- Follow the club’s safeguarding, behaviour, health and safety, first aid and allergy procedures.
- Report any concerns about a child’s welfare to the Designated Safeguarding Lead or Club Manager.
- Support children with personal care needs where required and in line with club procedures.
- Help maintain accurate records, including attendance, incidents and accidents.
Food and Mealtimes
- Support children during snack or mealtime routines.
- Encourage good hygiene, including handwashing before eating.
- Be aware of allergies, dietary requirements and food safety procedures.
- Help keep food areas clean, safe and organised.
Working as Part of a Team
- Work positively with other staff to create a happy and well-organised club.
- Communicate effectively with parents and carers at collection time when required.
- Attend relevant training and staff meetings.
- Follow all club policies and procedures.
- Be flexible and willing to support the day-to-day running of the club.

Essential
- A warm, friendly and caring approach.

- Ability to engage children in fun and positive activities.
Desirable
- Previous experience working with children in a school, nursery, playwork, childcare or youth setting.
- A childcare, playwork or relevant qualification.
- Paediatric first aid training.
- Safeguarding training.
- Food hygiene awareness.
