About this Role
Flexible Learning School is a well-established, Ofsted-rated Good independent alternative provision supporting approximately 150–200 pupils across our on-site and online provision. We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and structured learning environment where every young person is supported to thrive.
We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and highly motivated Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to join our Senior Leadership Team. This is a rewarding opportunity for an exceptional safeguarding professional to lead and develop our safeguarding culture, ensuring every pupil receives the highest standard of care, protection and support while maintaining compliance with statutory safeguarding responsibilities.
The Role
Based at our school, you will report directly to the Headteacher.
Salary: £30,000 – £38,000 per annum
Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday (Term Time plus 5 weeks)
Lunch Break: 30 minutes (unpaid)
Hours per Week: 37.5
Location: In person
Key Responsibilities
You will:
Lead safeguarding and child protection across the whole school.
Act as the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead and first point of contact for safeguarding concerns.
Manage referrals to Children's Social Care, the Police, Channel and other external agencies.
Support, advise and train staff on safeguarding procedures and statutory guidance.
Lead safeguarding investigations and maintain accurate safeguarding records.
Work closely with parents, external agencies and multi-agency partners.
Promote positive educational outcomes for vulnerable pupils.
Ensure safeguarding policies remain compliant with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
Lead safeguarding training and induction for all staff.
Oversee online safety, filtering and monitoring arrangements across the school.
Manage and support Deputy DSLs and promote a strong safeguarding culture throughout the organisation.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who has:
Significant experience as a Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy DSL within an educational setting.
Excellent knowledge of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), safeguarding legislation, Prevent and online safety.
Experience managing complex safeguarding and child protection cases.
Experience working effectively with vulnerable children, families and external agencies.
Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
The ability to make informed decisions in challenging situations.
A commitment to promoting the welfare, wellbeing and educational outcomes of young people.
It would be desirable if you also have:
A recognised DSL qualification (ideally Level 5).
Experience as a senior leader within a school.
Current First Aid qualification.
Experience contributing to child protection conferences and multi-agency working.
