We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated English Teacher who is passionate about developing literacy, communication and a love of learning. This is an exciting opportunity to help pupils build the reading, writing and spoken language skills they need to succeed in education, employment and everyday life while making a genuine difference to their confidence and future aspirations.

The Role

Based at our Hockley or Northfield site, you will report directly to the Head of Teaching and Learning.

• Salary: Competitive salary (dependent on experience)
• Hours: 9:15am – 3:30pm
• Working Pattern: Monday to Friday
• Lunch and Breaks: 1 hour (unpaid)
• Hours per Week: 26 hours 15 minutes
• Location: Hockley or Northfield, Birmingham

As our English Teacher, you will deliver engaging and inspiring lessons that develop pupils' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Working with small class sizes, you will adapt your teaching to meet the individual needs of pupils, helping them overcome barriers to learning, achieve recognised qualifications and develop the confidence to communicate effectively in school and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

• Plan, prepare and deliver engaging, high-quality English lessons that inspire and motivate pupils.
• Develop creative lesson plans and learning resources that meet curriculum requirements and support outstanding teaching and learning.
• Deliver a broad and balanced English curriculum that develops pupils' literacy, communication and critical thinking skills.
• Inspire a love of reading, writing and literature while encouraging pupils to become confident communicators.
• Differentiate learning to meet the individual needs of pupils, including those with SEND, SEMH and additional learning needs.
• Assess, monitor and record pupil progress using a range of formative and summative assessment strategies.
• Prepare pupils for GCSE English Language and Literature examinations and support them to achieve their full academic potential.
• Provide timely, constructive feedback that supports pupil progress and raises achievement.
• Set appropriate learning targets and monitor progress towards them.
• Create a positive, safe and inclusive classroom environment where pupils feel valued, supported and encouraged to succeed.
• Use effective behaviour management strategies to maximise learning and engagement.
• Build positive relationships with pupils, parents, carers and external professionals.
• Maintain accurate records relating to attendance, assessment, progress and pupil achievement.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to share best practice and contribute to curriculum development.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, CPD, parents' evenings and school events.
• Support the wider life of the school and contribute to continuous school improvement.
• Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and child protection in line with statutory guidance.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who has:

• A recognised teaching qualification (QTS, PGCE, DET, Cert Ed or equivalent).
• A degree or relevant qualification in English or a related subject.
• Experience teaching English at secondary level.
• Excellent lesson planning, preparation and organisational skills.
• Experience of assessing, monitoring and tracking pupil progress.
• Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
• The ability to differentiate learning for pupils with a wide range of abilities and additional needs.
• The ability to inspire pupils to develop confidence in reading, writing and spoken communication.
• High expectations of pupils' achievement, behaviour and personal development.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A commitment to inclusive education and improving outcomes for young people.
• A flexible, resilient and positive approach to teaching within an Alternative Provision environment.
• A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Experience of working within an Alternative Provision, specialist setting or with pupils with SEND or SEMH needs would be advantageous but is not essential.
