About this Role

Harborne Primary School is a vibrant, inclusive and ambitious school split across two sites – Station Road and Court Oak Road – serving 808 wonderful pupils. We are in an exciting transitional period as we continue to strengthen our vision, provision and leadership structures. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our pastoral team to provide high-quality pastoral and intensive support. This role is pivotal in promoting student wellbeing, engagement and retention, particularly for those at risk of exclusion or disengagement. In this role you will promote a calm, safe and respectful school environment

About the role:

As a pastoral assistant, you build trusting and supportive relationships with students to promote their emotional wellbeing, acting as a key adult for those who require daily check-ins, mentoring and consistent encouragement.

Responding to safeguarding concerns in line with school policy is a core aspect of the role, as is supporting students through transitions, crises or periods of heightened need. Working closely with those who display challenging behaviours, trauma responses or mental health difficulties forms a key part of everyday practice. The role also involves helping to de-escalate incidents and delivering restorative interventions that encourage positive relationships and behaviour.

Maintaining clear and detailed records of all interventions is essential, alongside effective liaison with parents, carers, social workers and external professionals to ensure joined-up support. Collaboration with teaching staff is equally important in order to promote classroom inclusion and strengthen behaviour management. Responsibilities also include supervising students during unstructured times or in reflection spaces, as well as supporting their reintegration following suspensions or extended absence.

About the candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience working with young people in highneed environments, ideally within a large primary school setting, and will bring a strong understanding of safeguarding, child development and effective behaviour management. They will remain calm, empathetic and solution focused under pressure, drawing on knowledge of traumainformed practice and restorative approaches to support pupils effectively. A relevant qualification in youth work, counselling, education or a related field is essential, alongside the skills and insight needed to build positive relationships and respond confidently to students’ diverse needs.

We Can Offer You

At Harborne Primary School, you will be joining a warm, supportive and highly committed staff team, all working together to create exceptional experiences for every child.

Our school places a strong emphasis on professional development, providing high quality CPD tailored to your role as a pastoral assistant, including opportunities to grow your skills, deepen your understanding of pastoral practice and develop future leadership potential.

We are proud of our positive, child centred ethos, where every pupil is valued, celebrated and encouraged to thrive both academically and emotionally. You will become part of a school community built on shared values, genuine collaboration and a commitment to wellbeing—where your contribution to supporting children’s pastoral care is recognised, supported and deeply appreciated.
