Teacher of Art & Design: Photography (part time)
Art is a popular and highly successful area of study at Denstone. The department thrives on the diversity of each student and has clear focus for each stage of a pupil’s development, with personal and individual responses encouraged from all students.
The department currently consists of two full time members of staff who have specialist expertise in a wide field of art alongside one other teacher who shares teaching with the neighbouring Design & Technology department. It is a well-resourced department with facilities for ceramics, photography, printing, fine art and textiles, with nearby IT rooms also available for use. The emphasis to record from life whenever possible is paramount to the students learning and the department has an array of displays that students can work from.
AQA A Level Fine Art and AQA GCSE Fine Art are both highly popular and well-established courses within the department. Typically, two GCSE groups study Fine Art in both the Fourth Form (Year 10) and Fifth Form (Year 11). Outcomes for students are consistently excellent: in the Summer 2025 examinations, 100% of A Level students achieved a grade B or higher, while at GCSE, 65% of candidates secured a grade 7 or above.
The department aims to provide a programme of work for each year group which encourages good practice in Art and Design education through the production of a comprehensive portfolio of work by each pupil. In the Lower School (our first, second and third forms) pupils are involved in a foundation course which provides a rounded education in many aspects of the subject, from formal drawing and creative graphic work to three-dimensional work in a variety of materials and digital images. Art is also often offered as an activity on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, when pupils can have extra time to develop their coursework as well as experimenting with other materials and techniques.
To accommodate expanding pupil numbers we are looking for a specialist teacher of Photography to teach and support students in this subject at both GCSE and A-Level. The successful candidate will have experience in this specialist area, demonstrating the ability to work flexibly within the Art department to nurture interest and support excellent student outcomes in these qualifications. There will also be opportunities to contribute more generally to the thriving art programme across the College.
This role is initially offered on a part-time basis (exact details of which will be agreed with the successful candidate). There may also be opportunities to be involved in other aspects of College life, such as tutoring and co-curricular activities and sport, over this time.
