We have an excellent opportunity for a Graduate Assistant to work at the school for the academic year 2026-2027. The position is designed to give a recent Science graduate the opportunity to gain experience teaching Biology.
We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist who specialises in life sciences who is keen to foster an understanding and instill a love of the subject among young people. They will be excited about explaining the many and sometimes complex forces which shape biological behaviour. They will have a sense of mission about biological literacy in an age where many claim to find science in general too difficult or abstract to recognise its value for their own lives.
The successful candidate will be an avid ambassador for the subject. Equally, they will appreciate the enormous potential this position will offer in terms of the development of their own communication skills and understanding of interpersonal dynamics in a first-rate educational institution. Whether the candidate goes on to teach as a full-time career or simply treats this as a fascinating experimental foray into education, we can guarantee that the experience will be invaluable.
Biology is a very popular and successful A Level subject at Radley, with in excess of 40 boys studying the subject at A Level (OCR). In the lower years every boy is required to take Biology for GCSE (AQA), either separate or combined sciences.
The Department is well housed in a modern, light building, and every room has its own computer and projector. There are eight members of staff in the department, most of whom have their own dedicated teaching lab. There is a separate departmental office with desks, computers, a printer/photocopier and kitchen facilities. The department is incredibly fortunate to be supported by three technicians and a well-equipped prep room. There is a ‘Radley Zoo’, a highlight for many a boy in the College…….
The Graduate Assistant will teach a reduced workload – around 24 forty-minute periods per week (three to four classes). We will provide the necessary training, including lesson observation.
Being a full-time boarding school there is also plenty of opportunity for the willing candidate to involve themselves in the extra-curricular life of the College, whether it be coaching games, playing in the orchestra, or running with their own enthusiasm through involvement in one of the College's many societies.
The Head of Science, Oliver Choroba (owc.choroba@radley.org.uk) or Head of Biology, Michael Noone (mgn.noone@radley.org.uk) are very happy to answer any informal questions concerning any matter.
In addition to a salary of £20,600, the College will provide accommodation, possibly in one of the College’s Boarding Houses as a member of the pastoral team. Meals during term time are free of charge. In short, the person we hope to appoint will be an enthusiast for scientist with an emphasis on the life sciences, who may be considering a career in teaching. The opportunity we are offering is to 'try before you buy' with plenty of help and support, and the added bonus of a salary and accommodation.
Radley College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. A disclosure, at the enhanced level, will be requested from the successful applicant, but a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining this position. S/he will also be required to produce original evidence of qualifications as well as evidence of the right to work in the UK.
