About this Role

Bedford School launched a Media Studies department in September 2023 to offer A-Level Media Studies to pupils in our Sixth Form. Media Studies is now a popular choice for Sixth Form pupils, with two teaching groups in both Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth.

We wish to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified Teacher of Media Studies to provide maternity cover from mid-November 2026 until July 2027. The start date is expected to be from mid-November 2026; however, this may vary depending on the commencement of the substantive postholder’s maternity leave. There is scope for the role to be part-time if this best suits the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be able to make a substantial contribution to Media Studies at our school, both as an academic subject and as an exciting part of our co-curricular provision in the creative arts and digital technology.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher of Media Studies.
  • Have strong subject knowledge and a passion for the discipline.
  • Be committed to delivering excellent outcomes for Sixth Form pupils.
  • Be able to contribute positively to the wider life of the School.
  • Have experience using video editing software and camera equipment.

This role could also be an ideal fit for a well-qualified and experienced media professional wishing to transition into a career in teaching. Bedford School has outstanding and well-established in-school support available for graduates and professionals who wish to train as teachers. It is anticipated that a qualified teacher appointed to a full-time role may also be able to offer a second teaching subject.

The Deputy Head (Academic), Nicholas Hopton and the Head of Media Studies, Hannah Keep would be very pleased to speak to potential candidates with questions about the role. Please contact Mrs Naomi Wrycroft (PA to Head) at nwrycroft@bedfordschool.org.uk to arrange contact.

Closing date: 31 August 2026

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early and to interview suitable candidates before the closing date. Applicants are therefore encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

The Bedford School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The School may carry out online searches on shortlisted applicants. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions on a self-declaration form in advance of attending an interview (including those which are “spent” unless they are “protected” under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.

Bedford School is part of The Harpur Trust.
