Teaching and Learning Assistant – Speech and Language

Location: Penn Fields School
Salary and Contract: Grade 4/ £20,816.00 - £22,187.00/ 35hpw / 44.85 weeks - Term Time Only

Penn Fields School is a trauma-aware setting committed to supporting every child to achieve their full potential. We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Teaching and Learning Assistant (Speech and Language) to join our team and make a real difference in the lives of students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

 

About the Role

As a Teaching and Learning Assistant with a focus on Speech and Language, you will:

  • Support and deliver learning under the direction of teaching staff, senior leaders, and the SENCO.
  • Work in classrooms to ensure SEN students can access learning.
  • Deliver speech and language interventions 1:1 and in small groups, following targets set by the Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Assist teachers in managing resources, classroom organisation, and creating communication-friendly environments.
  • Liaise with parents/carers and professionals to share progress and strategies.
  • Promote inclusion, independence, and positive relationships among students.
  • Follow a trauma-informed approach to support students’ emotional and social development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a speech and language caseload under guidance.
  • Support students’ literacy, numeracy, and communication skills across the curriculum.
  • Prepare and maintain communication resources, including ICT tools such as Gridplayer.
  • Deliver Singing and Signing sessions for the primary phase.
  • Organise the SALT timetable and contribute to workshops and progress meetings.
  • Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.


What We’re Looking For

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally in an SEN setting.
  • Knowledge in speech and language development.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and act as a role model.
  • Strong organisational skills and flexibility to work across key stages.
  • Commitment to professional development and teamwork.
