About this Role

River Academy is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Religious, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE) to deliver high quality teaching across the curriculum and contribute to a strong culture of inclusion, respect and academic ambition. The role involves planning and delivering effective lessons, supporting tutor provision and contributing to curriculum development so that all students make strong progress and achieve high academic standards

River Academy opened in September 2024 with 180 students and seven students in its resource base. From September 2026, student numbers will increase to 541 as the school welcomes its next cohort of Year 7 students. The school is currently heavily oversubscribed, with waiting lists in all year groups, River Academy is known for its high expectations and high levels of progress. Last year, in NGRT reading tests, Year 7 progressed from the 53rd percental to the 72nd percentile across the year. Similarly, 44 students in Year 7 achieved awards in the UK Junior Maths Challenge, which is way above the statistical expectation. On weekly basis River Academy is first placed in the entire country for Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader completion rates demonstrating a whole school commitment to ensure no learner falls behind. 

You will plan and deliver engaging Geography lessons, contribute to curriculum development and play a key role as a form tutor, supporting students’ academic and personal development.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan, resource and deliver highly effective RPE lessons in line with Trust frameworks and schemes of work
  • Motivate and inspire students to engage positively and aim high in their academic achievement
  • Contribute to curriculum development and enrichment opportunities, including trips and visits
  • Direct and supervise support staff within lessons

Assessment

  • Use assessment effectively to inform planning and close gaps in performance
  • Provide accurate, timely and constructive feedback to support student progress
  • Maintain clear communication with students and parents regarding progress and next steps

Behaviour and Student Wellbeing

  • Maintain high standards of behaviour for learning in line with Trust policies
  • Create a safe, purposeful and inclusive classroom environment 
  • Report and record safeguarding and wellbeing concerns in line with policy 

Pastoral and Inclusion

  • Act as a form tutor and contribute to personal development programmes
  • Support the progress, attendance and wellbeing of students
  • Contribute to inclusive practice to ensure equitable outcomes for all learners

Wider Contribution

  • Support whole school and Trust initiatives, including extra-curricular activities
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the school and Trust
  • Participate in appraisal, CPD and wider professional development

The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a good degree and relevant teaching qualification
  • Strong subject knowledge in RPE or a related discipline
  • Ability to deliver engaging and effective lessons that meet the needs of all learners
  • Commitment to high standards of behaviour, inclusion and safeguarding
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school

River Academy is a purpose-built secondary school serving the growing need for school places in the Reading area. Located on Richfield Avenue, the site includes specialist teaching facilities across the curriculum, including a hall, activity studio, learning resource centre, drama studio and sports studio. Classrooms are fully equipped with interactive screens and visualisers.

The school has high expectations for all students, with a clear focus on academic excellence and participation. When fully open, River Academy will serve students of all abilities and backgrounds, alongside an additional resource base for students with moderate learning difficulties.
