About the department:

Pupils are taught English Literature and Language as a combined offer throughout Key stage 3. Pupils currently have 7 x 1 hour lessons over the two week timetable cycle which includes a fortnightly Literacy focus and access to our exceptionally well stocked library. Student engage enthusiastically with our full subscription to Accelerated Reader which is integral to our reading offer. Our library boasts an extensive collection of texts, invaluable extra-curricular opportunities and is run by enthusiastic staff: one of whom is a published children’s author. Reward and praise sit at the forefront of our reading offer, ensuring students are enthusiastic and driven to read.

In Key Stage 4, all pupils study the WJEC Eduqas English Language and English Literature specifications. Pupils in Key Stage 4 have 9 lessons of English every two weeks. We currently have subscriptions to Google Classroom and GCSE Pod and continue to develop and utilise digital learning with clear appreciation for how this can empower learning beyond the classroom at all key stages. Intervention in the department is far-reaching to ensure all students have access to the equitable provision they deserve in order to succeed. These are run by passionate English teachers and specialist LSAs and have measurable impact on the confidence, relationships and outcomes of our students.

Every pupil, from Years 7 – 11, is taught English simultaneously and all year groups are taught in mixed ability groups. Schemes of work and teaching resources are robust across key stage 3 and 4 to ensure continuity across the department and to ensure teachers are able to focus on adapting this content to the individual needs of our unique learners.

We prioritise the development of all those who work within the department including championing our staff. Departmental training and CPD is regularly offered with a clear focus on developing pedagogical and subject knowledge with the aim of inspiring aspiring teachers and leaders and supporting career growth.
