Teacher and Head of Year
Full-time, Permanent
MPS/UPS £34,398 - £52,490 (Outer Fringe) + TLR 2B £5,871
Required from September 2026
We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.
We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified teacher, from any subject discipline, to join our thriving school community as a Head of Year. This role attracts a TLR2B allowance (currently £5,871).
St Mary’s Catholic School is a high-achieving, oversubscribed secondary school and sixth form with a strong sense of identity, belonging and purpose. Our most recent Ofsted inspection (October 2024) praised us as Outstanding for Quality of Education and Behaviour and Attitudes.
Inspectors described the quality of education as “exceptional”, with “exemplary behaviour” and a “remarkable culture of positive behaviour.” They also highlighted students’ courtesy, maturity, and consistently strong examination outcomes.
Our identity as a Catholic community shapes the pastoral relationships, daily routines, and character development across the school, a strength also reflected in our Catholic Schools Inspectorate report January 2025,
This role requires full time commitment due to the level of responsibility involved in leading the pastoral provision for a designated year group. The Head of Year needs to be consistently visible, accessible, and available throughout the school week to respond to emerging pastoral needs, support students, work with staff, and ensure high standards are maintained at all times.
The Head of Year will lead the pastoral provision for a designated year group, taking responsibility for:
• Attendance, behaviour, and achievement
• Academic progress and pastoral welfare
• Leading and supporting a team of form tutors
• Working collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team, curriculum leaders, support staff, parents/carers, external agencies and representatives of the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust
You will also work closely with fellow Head of Years to ensure a continuous, coherent pastoral journey for students across all Key Stages, including effective transition between phases.
The successful candidate will be:
• An enthusiastic and dedicated teacher with high expectations
• A positive role model, acting with care, compassion and empathy
• A strong communicator able to motivate both students and staff
• Committed to our Catholic ethos and values (all faith backgrounds welcome to apply)
• Able to demonstrate leadership qualities and pastoral insight
• Driven to contribute to a community where “excellence for all” is more than a motto—it’s a lived daily reality
This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a school recognised for its exceptional teaching, exemplary behaviour, and strong sense of community. We believe in developing our staff, nurturing talent, and supporting ambitious career progression.
We warmly welcome applications from teachers at all career stages, of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos, who are eager to make a meaningful difference.
A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants. St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.
Apply in writing using the forms available on MyNewTerm (preferred) or available on our website www.stmarys.net: Teacher Application Form, Consent to Obtain References Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form.
