Stowmarket High School has an exciting future. We have seen a year-on-year improvement in GCSE results, but this forms just one piece of the jigsaw, and we strive to provide the best all-round education for our young people. Our enriching curriculum seeks to give our students every access to knowledge, skills and experiences to help them prepare for the future and encourage them to be independent, creative, confident and socially responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society. We are proud to be the town school and work to improve the life chances and opportunities for all our students.
We are looking to appoint an inspirational Teacher of Music to ensure the excellent curriculum outcomes for our students. This role is being offered on a full-time basis (1.0 FTE). This is an opportunity for either an experienced, well qualified teacher or an exceptional ECT, with the possibility of an additional Teaching & Learning Responsibility for the right candidate.
The right candidate should be aware that the school has had to reduce its teaching provision of music due to the shortage of music teachers available for employment. Consequently, we have needed to put a break in our Key Stage 4 provision from 2025 - 2027 to ensure we have correct teaching coverage. The role, from 2025/26 would be teaching Key stage three only, with the reintroduction of Key Stage 4 teaching from 2026/27 which will coincide with the school expansion and a newly designed Music suite. We are passionate about a broad balanced curriculum at Stowmarket High, as well as ensuring our students have a high-quality provision.
The Music Department produces several impressive events each year and runs a range of ensembles, including rock band, choir, singing ensemble and orchestra. A team of visiting teachers provide lessons on piano, violin, brass, singing, guitar, bass guitar and drum kit. It has a well-resourced music room where all students have access to keyboards and Apple Mac computers running GarageBand. The course for KS3, encompasses listening, performance and composition, and has been in place for a number of years and all pupils achieve a high level of skill. Similarly, the course at KS4 is equally successful when taught. The department is supported at events by a keen pupil-led team and there is a real sense of pupil involvement.
