If you
think life at John Colet School would suit you, then we are looking for an
ambitious, enthusiastic teacher to join us from September 2026. This post is
suitable for an ECT or a more experienced teacher. The ability to teach other
Humanities subjects at Key Stage 3 would be an advantage. We would also be able
to offer Sociology at Key stage 4 and 5 if that would interest you.
As a
Geography teacher you will be supported by an experienced subject team leader
who has a culture of sharing teaching strategies and resources. The department
is well resourced with a wealth of powerpoints and resources available.
Geography has 3 dedicated teaching rooms and access to the Humanities Office.
Each room has an interactive whiteboard, a multimedia projector and a desktop
computer with access to various IT programmes. There are also 3 visualizers in
the department. The Humanities building provides a good working environment
with access to a variety of resources.
The Geography team currently comprises a team of 2 specialist teachers. There is a strong sense of teamwork within the department – supporting each other and sharing good practice is seen as integral to our development. We have a comprehensive and detailed set of schemes of work for all Key Stages which are constantly reviewed.
The lessons are
planned to inspire curiosity about the world, teaching students about diverse
places, people, resources, and environments, focusing on the interaction
between physical (e.g., rivers, climate) and human (e.g., settlements, trade)
processes, alongside essential geographical skills like map reading, data
analysis, and fieldwork, building locational knowledge and understanding of
interconnected global systems. KS3 is planned to introduce and
support learning at KS4 and 5, and is the most opted for subject at GCSE.
Results last year at GCSE were 8.6% above national
average at 73.7%, and at A level, the department got 100% A*-B. A set of data
we are very proud of, and reflects how geography is viewed and valued by the
students at John Colet.Year 9 study the AQA Specification
GCSE course. This three year KS4 allows for development of geographical skill,
information gathering and analysis, in good time for formal external
examinations. It also includes the
yearly field trips to Iceland and Southend.
At post-16 level, the department
provides A level Geography through AQA including a 5 day residential to Slapton
Field Studies centre at KS5. Instagram @johncoletgeography
“My passion for Geography
started the moment I stepped foot in my first class at the John Colet. The
topics and content piqued my interest straight away.
I instantly grew a solid
connection with my teacher at the time, who was both organised and fun and he always
said to me: ‘You will do geography A-level’. He believed in me and that’s what
inspired and encouraged me to do so well. He saw my potential. My love for
geography continued to flourish and every new bit of content would just click
in my brain. The revision sources that were given to me were really organised
and I found them really helpful, along with the revision classes. I’m proud to
say I achieved a 9 at GCSE with just single digit marks away from 100%.
I’m now studying Geography
A-level and am thoroughly enjoying going deeper into the geography world. I’m
also really looking forward to the Geography field trip in June, which will
make my connections with my teachers even better. One thing that will forever
stick with me though, is the potential my first geography teacher saw in me.”

From Challenge Partners peer review March
2024:
● ‘Students
describe the school as ‘welcoming’, strongly echoed by new staff and students
who quickly felt ‘fully part of the community.'
● ‘Staff find that induction and whole
school professional development programmes directly inform practice that
support both staff and students. One teacher explained how ‘literacy training
has improved how I teach languages to students with lower reading ages.’ One
member of staff stated that since joining JCS they have ‘become a better
teacher.’
● New staff compare JCS to their previous
schools and state that facilities at the school are excellent, ‘Stuff works!’
●
They describe leaders as approachable with strong communication and a
focus on well-being. As a result, new staff feel settled and ready to work
quickly, with one concluding, ‘My life is better since joining John Colet.’
● Teachers drive the ethos for students to
thrive through their relationships, support and how they advocate for student
needs. A wide range of students feel that their teachers are the most important
aspect of the school. As a result, students self-regulate whilst working
independently, eager to complete projects and extended activities.
From Ofsted October 2024:
“Pupils
are happy here and are welcoming to visitors. The behaviour and relationships are
very positive, both in lessons and in social time. The school has a family feel
and its vision of ‘every student thriving’ underpins all its work. Its work
with vulnerable pupils is extremely well coordinated and valued by pupils and
parents alike. This contributes to the school’s highly inclusive and supportive
culture…Lesson routines are consistent and support positive and purposeful
learning environments. “
