Make a difference where it really matters.

At West SILC, we know that strong families change lives — and that learning thrives when children, young people, and their families feel understood, supported, and empowered.

We are seeking a skilled, compassionate, and proactive Family Support Worker & Outreach Tutor to join our special school community. This is a unique role that combines whole-school family support and early help with a targeted outreach education function, working across our SILC sites.

About the role

This is a key role within West SILC, supporting families and learners across our special school provision.

The role is rooted in family support and early help, working with families across the SILC to build strong relationships, identify emerging needs, and provide timely, preventative support. You will work with families whose children are attending school as well as those facing more complex challenges, empowering parents and carers and helping to reduce barriers to wellbeing, engagement, and learning. This work is relationship-based and not attendance-led.

Where needed, the role also includes targeted outreach or home-based learning for a small number of learners who are temporarily unable to access school. Working alongside teaching staff, you will help maintain continuity of education and support successful reintegration into school.

Together, this allows you to provide joined-up support that considers both the family context and the learner’s educational needs.

About you

You will be someone who:

  • Builds authentic, trusting relationships with families
  • Believes in early help and prevention, not just crisis response
  • Is confident working independently while valuing multi-agency collaboration
  • Understands the complexity of SEND, SEMH, and family life
  • Can balance compassion with professional boundaries
  • Is organised, reflective, and solution-focused
  • Wants to make a real, lasting difference beyond the classroom

You don’t need to have “done it all” — but you do need the right values, resilience, and commitment to learning.

Why work at West SILC?

  • Be part of a values-driven special school where relationships come first
  • A role with real scope and autonomy, not a bolt-on or attendance-policing function
  • Strong multi-disciplinary working and supportive leadership
  • Ongoing training, supervision, and professional development
  • The chance to shape and strengthen family support practice across West SILC

Safeguarding

We promote diversity and want a workforce which reflects the population of Leeds. An enhanced DBS check is required for appointment to this post.

Applications are preferred to be submitted via My New Term (West SILC)

Closing date: 12 noon on Monday 19th February (please note we may interview strong candidates before the closing date)

Interviews will be held week beginning Monday 23rd February
