About this Role

Purpose of Job

To work under the guidance of the class teacher/senior staff to:

·         Help accelerate pupil progress and raise pupil achievement through targeted intervention and support, implementing agreed work programmes with individuals or groups of pupils in or out of the classroom

·         Provide support (pastoral/behavioural/learning) in addressing the needs of pupils who require particular help to overcome barriers to learning as agreed and with relevant training and support, provide specialist   support for identified pupils with specific needs, ensuring their inclusion, their safety at all times and access to learning

·         Support pupils during PPA as required and supervise classes occasionally during the short-term absence of the class teacher

·         Provide First Aid

Duties and responsibilities

Supporting pupils

·         Foster curiosity, resilience, independence, confidence and effective collaboration for learning

·         Support pupils’ independent learning skills and help develop positive behaviours for learning

·         Under the guidance of and in close liaison with the class teacher/senior staff provide pastoral support for pupils

·         Support pupils in the implementation of individual behaviour support plans as required

·         Nurture individual pupil interests and create opportunities for success beyond the classroom 

·         As agreed and with relevant training and support, provide support for identified pupils with specific needs, ensuring their inclusion, their safety at all times and access to learning

·         Assist the teacher in providing challenge and stretch for children of all abilities and support pupil engagement

Supporting learning

·         Establish productive working relationships with staff and pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations at all times

·         Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils within the class and across the school

·         Encourage pupils to interact positively, work cooperatively with others and support the engagement of all pupils in their learning

·         Assist with the development and implementation of intervention and support programmes for pupils, including those with special educational needs

·         Help pupils to identify their own barriers to learning and ways in which these can be overcome

·         Provide feedback to pupils in relation to their progress and achievement and what they need to do next to move their learning forward

·         Promote independence and encourage pupils’ resourcefulness and self-reliance

·         Support pupils in developing positive behaviours for learning

·         Set high expectations for pupils’ learning and behaviour towards adults and each other

·         Help motivate pupils and to raise expectations of themselves and their achievements 

Supporting teaching

·         Work with the class teacher and across the year group or phase to help establish an appropriate learning environment within and beyond the classroom

·         Liaise closely with the class teacher in the planning and implementation of interventions and learning activities to raise pupil achievement and target support effectively within the class.

·         Evaluate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observation and recording of learning and achievement against agreed objectives

·         Maintain records of pupils’ learning and achievement as agreed with the class teacher/senior staff

·         Support pupil self-assessment and review of learning and progress within lessons and over time

·         Implement agreed learning and intervention programmes, supporting consistency in practice across the school while adjusting activities according to pupils’ learning needs

·         Support the development of pupils learning skills, in particular their independence, resilience, confidence, ability to cooperate and learn as part of a team

·         Support the development of a distinctive Brookmead Curriculum and assist in the production of high quality resources and opportunities to celebrate children’s learning and achievement. 

·         To support pupils while learning is led by the parallel class teacher during PPA

·         To supervise pupils during the short-term or occasional absence of the class teacher under the direction of a teacher.

·         To assist the teacher in the cycle of planning and assessment for specific areas of learning and for targeted pupil groups and in the management and preparation of resources;

·         To assist the teacher in identifying pupils across the ability range who are at risk of underachievement (vulnerable pupils)

Support for the school

·         Consistently demonstrate commitment to the school’s vision and values both within school and within the wider community, genuinely striving to bring learning to life and life to learning for all pupils, and contribute to the overall ethos and aims of the school

·         Liaise sensitively and professionally with parents and carers as agreed with the teacher/senior staff and participate as appropriate in review meetings with parents.

·         Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, pupil behaviour, health and safety, staff conduct, security, confidentiality and data protection and report all concerns to an   appropriate member of the leadership team

·         Support the inclusion of all pupils and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop as individuals and as members of the school and wider community

·         Establish constructive relationships with school staff or other professionals who support children, to help raise achievement and support pupil progress

·         Attend and participate in meetings as appropriate

·         Participate in training and other learning activities as required and actively seek opportunities for own professional development

·         Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to support and advise others

·         Assist in the training and induction of school staff as appropriate

·         Supervise pupils on visits and out of school activities as required

·         Carry out any duties as directed by line manager, senior staff or headteacher
