Purpose
of the Post:
To work within the nursery’s Family Support worker to support parents, carers,
children, and their families in children's learning and development. The role
aims to ensure that, in partnership with the nursery and other agencies,
children and their families are supported to meet key developmental outcomes and
access the necessary services to support their well-being.
Principal
Responsibilities:

Support
the Family Support Worker in delivering family activities, Stay and Play
sessions, and other parental engagement initiatives in alignment with the
School Development Plan.
·
Collaborate
across the nursery as directed by the Family Support Worker, Headteacher, or
Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
·
Assist
in fostering family engagement to enhance children’s learning, well-being, and
overall development.
·
Implement
agreed actions following assessments of children's and families' needs,
including participation in school-based meetings and home visits.
·
Provide
support to children during key life transitions, including educational moves
that may affect their development or learning.
·
Attend
and participate in relevant training and professional development as directed
by the Family Worker, Headteacher, or SLT.
·
Maintain
accurate, timely, and confidential records; ensure appropriate information is
documented and shared within the nursery team.
·
Serve
as a point of contact for families and staff to facilitate clear, consistent
communication and information sharing.
·
Support
or lead crèche provision as required by the Family Support Team.
·
In
the absence of the Family Worker, deputise for Stay and Play or other self-led
groups. This may include providing support in other areas of the nursery as
needed.
·
Share
responsibility for gate duties during arrival and collection times.
·
Build
and maintain positive relationships with parents and carers.
·
Record
all concerns, conversations, and relevant information on CPOMS and share with
appropriate staff as necessary.
·
Plan
and deliver 1:1 or small group sessions (e.g., story, yoga, music),
particularly for children identified as CP, CIN, FPS, or those with emerging
needs.
·
Offer
a weekly nurture timetable and liaise with class teams to identify children
requiring additional emotional or social support.
·
Conduct
home visits to support families and build strong parent/carer relationships.
·
Make
referrals and liaise with external agencies such as Flying Start, Health
Visiting, and CAMHS to provide appropriate family support.
·
Collaborate
with Flying Start to ensure families access the most relevant and appropriate
support services.
·
Organise
and deliver coffee mornings or parent workshops on general or specific topics
(e.g., toilet training, behaviour management, healthy eating), potentially in
collaboration with external agencies.
·
Support
children and families during the transition into nursery, including offering
reassurance and guidance to parents/carers.
·
Assist
with transitions between nursery age groups, particularly from 0–3s to 3–5s,
ensuring continuity of care and support.
·
Undertake
ad hoc administrative tasks, including the creation of flyers, newsletters,
letters, and email communication with parents.
·
Assist
in maintaining community spaces by:
·
Preparing
environments for group activities
·
Creating
and updating displays and notice boards
·
Organising
and managing resources
·
Monitoring
and replenishing refreshment supplies
·
Ensuring
the environment is safe and clean in accordance with health and safety
regulations
·
Carry
out any other duties and responsibilities reasonably assigned by the
Headteacher or Senior Leadership Team that are commensurate with the role and
grade.
Context:
Grasmere Nursery School has a strong commitment
to inclusion and parental involvement. The Family Support Assistant will work
closely with the nursery’s Inclusion Team to support families through home
visits, school-based opportunities, and wider community engagement.
This role is term-time only, plus one
additional week as directed by the senior leadership team. The position is
initially for one year, with the possibility of extension subject to funding
availability.

required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and adhere to all safeguarding
policies and procedures.
