About this Role

Wimbledon College is seeking a reliable, motivated, and proactive individual to join our dedicated site team as an Apprentice Caretaker Assistant. This is a fantastic opportunity to kickstart your career in facilities management, gaining hands-on experience at our historic school site while earning a professional qualification.

Working under the guidance of our Site Supervisor, you will play a vital role in ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our students, staff, and visitors.

What You'll Do:

  • Security & Safety: Assist with locking/unlocking the premises, conduct security patrols, and train as an emergency Fire Marshall.
  • Maintenance & Grounds: Carry out minor repairs (carpentry, doors, windows), maintain school grounds, and tackle seasonal tasks like winter snow clearing.
  • Operations & Logistics: Support the setup of rooms for school events and external lettings, assist with deliveries, and safely move furniture.
  • Compliance & Hygiene: Monitor cleaning standards, restock supplies, and maintain essential health and safety logs.

Why Apply?

  • Earn While You Learn: Receive a competitive salary of £17,940 per year (£11.50/hr)—significantly above the standard National Minimum Wage for apprentices.
  • Professional Qualification: Gain a Level 2 Facilities Services Operative qualification with specialist training delivered by GLP Training.
  • Future Prospects: Successful completion opens up potential for permanent employment within our site team or progression into facilities management.
  • Supportive Environment: Work within a school community that prides itself on Cura Personalis (care for the whole person).

Please Note: As this role is based within a school, the successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and must support the school’s distinctive Jesuit ethos.

Wimbledon College would like all candidates to answer specific questions for the personal statement section. For reference, here is a preview of the questions/headings:

  1. Why does an apprenticeship in facilities and caretaking appeal to you, and what do you hope to achieve by the end of this 12–18 month programme?
  2. Why are you interested in becoming an Apprentice Caretaker Assistant specifically at Wimbledon College, and how will you support our Catholic, Jesuit school ethos?
  3. How do your skills and education line up with the requirements of this role?
  4. Working in a school requires a high level of responsibility, patience, and safeguarding awareness. Why do you feel you are well-suited to working in an environment surrounded by young people?

Wimbledon College would like all candidates to answer some screening questions before completing the application to support them with shortlisting. Here is a preview of the questions:

  1. The working hours for this role are Monday to Friday, 9:00am–4:00pm. Reliability and punctuality are vital for school safety. Please confirm that you can consistently commute to Wimbledon College (SW19 4NS) for a 9:00am start.
  2. This role involves physical, hands-on work (such as lifting furniture, minor DIY repairs, and outdoor grounds maintenance in all weathers). Can you share an example of any practical work or hands-on tasks you have done before?
  3. Caretaking can be unpredictable—you might be in the middle of a task when called away to handle an urgent spill, a delivery, or a safety issue. How do you handle changing priorities while maintaining a positive, "unflappable" attitude?
